FLASHBACK FRIDAY FOR FIGHT FANS- 1952

REMEMBER WHEN?

NEW YORK TIMES- SEPTEMBER 21, 1952

  • The fight was shown on closed circuit TV in 50 theaters in                                            31 cities coast to coast.
  • Marciano was a slight betting favorite.
  • A left hook from Walcott floored Marciano early in the first round.                                           It was the first time in his 43-fight professional career that                                      Marciano had been knocked down. He got up at the count of four.
  • Going into the 13th round, Walcott was ahead on all 3 official scorecards.                Early in the round, Walcott backed up to the ropes and began to launch                     a right hand, but Marciano beat him to it and put him down for the count                 with a right to the jaw.
  • The fight was named The Ring Fight of the Year.
  • The 13th round was named The Ring Round of the Year.
  • The fight was named the 16th Greatest Title Fight of All-Time                                       by The Ring in 1996.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS, LAKER FANS!

The Lakers had four days off before their
only win of the season vs. Charlotte.

If that extensive rest is the key to their success,
the Lakers will not win another game until February 20th when they host Brooklyn after the new, extended NBA All-Star break.

Mark your calendars!

KOBE'S COLORFUL COMMENTS ON TRADE RUMORS

This week, Kobe Bryant responded to rumors that he might want to be traded to a contender.

"That's not what I do.
I'm extremely loyal to the Lakers.
I bleed purple and gold."

Those comments were very similar to what he told me on
KLAC-AM, back in 2004,
when he was planning to opt out of his contract,
but hoping to ink a long term deal with the Lakers.

"I Love being a Laker!

I saw myself as a Laker since I was five years old.

I like to think of the business side of things, too.

By me opting out, it gives me a chance to re-sign for more years and be a Laker for a longer period of time.

I am very optimistic that that is what is going to happen.
I will listen to other teams just to see what is out there,
but I LOVE being a laker!

I love putting on the golden armor.
That’s what I call it “the golden armor.”

NEW RULE! I SAY SO!

 This is official now.
As long as the Bulldogs from Starksville are
#1 in the college football rankings,
anyone playing touch or flag football,
must count to "FIVE- MISSISSIPPI STATE" before rushing the quarterback.

HE KICKS…AND HE SCORRRRRRRRES!!!!!

We all know that kickers score a lot of points on the football field, but they rarely get involved in much action and their numbers usually come from extra points and field goals.
The tables turned for one kicker in a recent game
 between Dayton and Marist.
Take a look.

LONG B4 JETER- THERE WAS "THE MICK"!

Everybody is talking about Derek Jeter and rightfully so.

He is one of the greatest Yankees ever and his historic MLB career is coming to and end, but long before Jeter donned the pinstripes,

Mickey Mantle was the buzz in baseball and the Bronx.
Mantle was the subject of a recent Bio.com mini doc and I was pleased to be included in the conversation.

A MATTER OF TIME- PLAYING TIME!

Congratulations to Florida State University on their win over Clemson and on their handling of the latest
 Jameis Winston incident.

The Seminoles won despite Winston being suspended for the Clemson game.
Heck! The Tigers' kicker turned out to be FSU's MVP,
(the Duck Dynasty crew gave a standing ovation to that first field goal attempt. It did everything but quack!) but the important issues is that Florida State finally figured out that the only way to get any player's attention, and make them realize the significance of their actions, is to take away precious playing time.

Based on Winston's repeated lapses of judgment, the original half-game suspension was not enough. Hopefully, the full game suspension sent the message to all the FSU players that bad decisions carry serious consequences.

If coaches and administrators will spread the message that bad behavior, grade fixing, "looking the other way", and overall athlete entitlement will not be tolerated throughout the collegiate ranks and high school sports, we might not have to deal with as many major issues at the professional level as well.

It has STOP and it has to START somewhere!

WHO KNEW???

THE NFL DIDN'T KNOW?
THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY DIDN'T KNOW?
T-M-Z DIDN'T KNOW
THAT THE ELEVATOR VIDEO EXISTED
OF RAVENS' RUNNING BACK, RAY RICE,
KO-ing HIS FIANCE?

WE LIVE IN AN AGE OF SURVEILLANCE!
DID THEY THINK THAT HOTELS ONLY MONITORED
 THE OUTSIDES OF ELEVATORS?
COME ON NFL!
YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE BETTER THAN THIS!

MEMO TO JANAY PALMER:
HOW COULD YOU MARRY RAY RICE AFTER HE BRUTALLY ASSAULTED YOU?

WHY WOULD YOU WANT THAT MAN(?)
NEAR THE CHILD YOU SHARE?
HOW COULD YOU TRUST HIM?

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU??

BTW- THANKS TO RICE'S LAWYER,
MICHAEL DIAMONDSTEIN,
WHO TOLD THE ATLANTIC CITY PRESS,
AFTER THE PUNCHING INCIDENT THAT ,

"We vehemently deny that Mr. Rice
committed an aggravated assault."

THE VIDEO PROVES OTHERWISE!

We all knew what Rice did in that elevator,

but once you actually see it,

you will wonder

why he wasn't prosecuted and why the

NFL suspended Rice for only two games.

THE ART OF JOAN!!

We are fortunate to know people who make us laugh.
We are sad when their voices are silenced.
Like her or not, Joan Rivers made a lot of people laugh
for a lot of years and she did it in her inimitable way!

She was clever, creative, controversial and cutting
but she was never dull or uninteresting.
Here are some of Joan Rivers' classic jokes.

FOR ALL YOU BASEBALL EXHIBITIONISTS

There is a great baseball memorabilia exhibit going on
at the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, CA.

It has been there all summer and runs through
 Labor Day Weekend.

This is not a card show or a swap meet.
Nothing is for sale!
This is an exhibit of historic baseball items such as uniforms,

baseballs, gloves, masks, bats,

pennants, scorecards, pictures,

  trophies, movie memorabilia,
newspaper articles,

and LOTS more!

Plus, for the price of admission, you also get to tour the historic Reagan Library which houses the former president's Air Force One as well as numerous historical exhibits!

I highly recommend it.

LETTERMAN REMEMBERS ROBIN WILLIAMS

This David Letterman tribute to Robin Williams is more than 10 minutes long, but it is very well worth your time.
Letterman reflected, on his TV show, about their early years at the comedy clubs and there are some great clips from William's many appearances on "The Late Show."

There is even a clip of young Dave appearing with Williams
on the "Mork and Mindy" show.
I hope you enjoy it.
(there are two videos on the page connected to this link.
you want the second one behind the picture of
Dave, Robin and Richard Pryor)
